My Thing A Day from 1/10/13 - “The Twilight Magician” I’m not afraid to admit that I’m a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic; like every show from Lauren Faust that I’ve seen, I find it to be very well-written, very educational, highly entertaining, and easy to watch while I draw or crochet (which is a must). The other ponies are going to be coming soon, so follow me for updates!
I’m going to take a moment to teach you about parody - characters engaging in acts in which they would not engage in per canon, or portrayed in a way which is not characteristic of their origin. For instance, Twilight Sparkle isn’t actually a human, so even though she’s very skilled with magic, this drawing would be considered a parody, and as such is fully protected under the law. Parody is a wonderful way for artists to sell fanart without actually selling fanart (which is illegal without the appropriate permissions, though some laws allow for commissioned fanart, which I am currently investigating further).
The next time that you go to an anime convention, check out the Dealer’s Room/Artist Alley there, and see how many parodies you can spot.
